SJ Boyz: The Real Deal
Written by dgray

The S.J. Boyz started off as a local group, consisting of 20-year-old Sho-Sho (in the middle), 22-year-old Smoke (on the right), and 19-year-old Test, under the management of Smoke’s father, Jimmy Ray. With the release of their recent hits “Shoulder Jerkin” and “501 Levis”, they have taken a dance and created a trend and fan base. They've performed from Fort Smith, Arkansas to Atlanta to Texas, and soon plan on hitting the rest of the nation. With co-signs from radio personalities Hollyhood Bay Bay and Jabber-Jaws, and steady airplay from both radio stations 99.7 KMJJ and rival 103.7 The Beat, these boys are hitting the radio and streets hard.

How did y’all get started rapping?

Sho-Sho: I heard other people rapping and just said I could do it.

Smoke: I’m originally a dancer. I’m good with words and I always wanted to rap. Plus, my dad (Jimmy Ray) had supported my dream, so I started rapping!

Who produces the beats?

Sho-Sho: I produce the beats.

Jimmy Ray: We all play our part. Everything we put together always works, so we keep what we have going on. I get them to listen to old CD’s and tell him (Sho Sho) to go and put in that beat what it should've had.

How long have y’all been performing and how long have you been in the rap game?

Jimmy Ray: I had been promoting shows, events, concerts, and I have been connected with Jabber Jaws and Bay Bay in Shreveport for ten years.

Smoke: August 2010, and we performed every weekend since then.

Where have you traveled to performance-wise?

Smoke: All of Louisiana, Atlanta , Texas, and Arkansas.

How did you get the buzz built for the group and the song?

Jimmy Ray: I wanted the brand first. I did a lot of shirts. And I did a YouTube with instructional videos, which immediately picked up 10,000 views and is currently at 100,000 views.

How did you hook up with Bay Bay?

Jimmy Ray: I’ve been down with him since ten years ago. I am Jabber Jaws right-hand man. I do numbers concerning business shows, etc.

Jimmy Ray, how did you get into management?

Jimmy Ray: I felt like I could help kids because I had been helping AAU basketball teams. I decided to go into management instead of going for a label. I didn’t want to limit myself. I walk by faith. I did it once and I can do it again.

Do you have a mixtape or album?

Smoke: Every song we do is like a hit single, so we are doing singles. We don’t have an album out yet.

Who is promoting your group?

Jimmy Ray: Jabber Jaws

Do you have any endorsements?

Jimmy Ray: We shot a video with a song titled “501 Levis”. We have a potential business partner with 501 Levi Jeans.

Do you have any potential record deals?

Jimmy Ray: Interscope [Records] called the head man Troy Marshall, and I was told not to ask who called. Someone saw the video for “Shoulder Jerking” and Bay-Bay called. I was told not to ask, but I found out he was the Vice President of Interscope. Then, Eazy-E’s wife called discussing a deal, but we couldn’t come to an agreement. It’s in the future to get a distribution deal.

Do you have any potential ideas brewing for your group?

Smoke: I’m an entertainer.  My passion is acting and selling dreams, I just want to just kick the door in and take over TV, videos, tracks for ya cd player. I do it for the kids - they look up to me. I have 5,012 [Facebook] friends and 28 pending friend requests on Facebook. Every day, I have ten kids telling me they like my hair or my swag. I’m going to start a dance class. That’s the way I feel I will give back.

Sho-Sho: Be the best at producing and rapping. I have been rapping since I was 12 years ago.

Jimmy Ray: First thing I would do if I had a deal is immediately find a regular person to go and record with to help them to get into the mainstream.

How does it feel to live your dreams?

Smoke: I got so much I want to do and exercise - all my talents and skills - and not let it go until I accomplished all my goals.

Sho-Sho: It feels good.

Jimmy Ray: I wouldn’t change it .
